BTEC First Certificate in Horticulture

This option will be for pupils who have an interest in working with the land, growing and cultivating crop and plants. The course is a mixture of theory and practical work and gives pupils opportunities to work in the community garden.  There is no requirement for any prior knowledge about growing plants and horticulture in general although a good grounding in plant biology from the science programme of study is useful.

Units of study

The course is made of a two core units which all students have to complete at least one and then one further unit from a choice of 6.  The units covered are:-

Unit 2: Soil Science
Unit 8 Horticultural crop production outdoors

If students prefer other units then these could be considered.

To be successful on this course you need to be?

  • Motivated to complete written work
  • Work as part of a team
  • Not be frightened of getting your hands dirty
  • Be willing to work outside even if it is raining

How will the course be assessed?

All units are centre-assessed with external moderation. Evidence can be in the form of written work, photographs, practical observations, recording or video.

What do I need to know or be able to do before taking this course?

We will give all interested pupils a taster session to see if they like the sort of activities covered in the course.
