BTEC First Certificate in Applied Science

.

BTEC Level 2 First Certificate in Applied Science offers an approach based on the learner taking on the role of being employed within the scientific industry.

Teaching strategies reflect the nature of the work within science-based industries, using a series of assignments and activities encouraging learners to take responsibility and ownership of their learning.

The qualification is mostly internally assessed with Students building a portfolio of work which will be externally moderated to ensure it complies with national standards. It is therefore important for pupils to keep up-to-date with their work.  There will be an external examination taken in the summer of Year 10 and Year 11.

The course gives the equivalent of a GCSE at C grade for work at a pass standard.  Some students will want to attempt further tasks in order to achieve passes at a merit standard to achieve a B grade equivalence.

Though the course is not suitable for students intending to take A level sciences, it does allow progress to BTEC National in Applied Science or other related BTEC Nationals, GCE Applied Science or related NVQ qualifications, or even to enter the world of employment.
